Whether you are developing packaging for cosmetics, fragrance, chocolate, jewelry, electronics or a limited-edition product, these answers will help you prepare the right information and avoid delays during sampling and production.
Quotation and Project Planning
01. What information do I need to request a custom packaging quotation?
For an accurate quotation, please provide:
- Packaging style
- Product or internal box dimensions
- Estimated order quantity
- Preferred materials
- Printing and finishing requirements
- Insert requirements
- Delivery country and postal code
- Expected delivery date
Reference photos, sketches, artwork or an existing packaging sample are also helpful. If some details have not been confirmed, HKY PACKAGE can recommend a suitable structure and material based on your product, budget and target market.
02. Can I get a quotation if I do not have a packaging design?
Yes. You do not need a finished design to start your project.
Send us your product dimensions, weight, photos, quantity and examples of packaging you like. Our team can recommend a box structure, material, protective insert and finishing combination.
Once the structure is confirmed, we can prepare a dieline for your designer or help place your existing logo and artwork on it.
03. How do I get an accurate quote, and how long does it take?
Custom packaging does not have a reliable standard price because every change in size, structure, material, quantity or finishing can affect the cost.
Standard projects can normally be evaluated within 24 hours after we receive the required information. Projects involving special materials, custom inserts or several structural options may require additional time.
To compare different solutions, you can request quotations for multiple quantities or material options at the same time.
04. What factors affect the cost of custom packaging?
The main cost factors include:
- Box dimensions and structural complexity
- Paper and board thickness
- Order quantity
- Printing coverage
- Surface finishing
- Insert material
- Assembly requirements
- Shipping method
Higher quantities normally reduce the unit price because setup costs are spread across more boxes. HKY PACKAGE can also review the structure and recommend practical changes that may reduce costs while maintaining appearance and protection.
05. Should I provide the internal or external box dimensions?
For most projects, internal dimensions are more useful because they determine whether the product and insert will fit correctly.
Please clearly state whether the measurements are internal or external. If you are unsure, send us the product dimensions, weight and photos. For irregular products, a physical sample or 3D drawing may help us develop a more accurate structure.
MOQ, Design and Sampling
06. What is your minimum order quantity?
Our recommended order quantity is generally 1,000 pieces, as this quantity usually provides a better balance between production cost, finishing options and unit price. However, the actual minimum order quantity depends on the box type, dimensions, materials and printing processes.
For selected rigid boxes, folding cartons and trial projects, we can support orders starting from 500 pieces. For certain packaging projects suitable for small-batch production, we may also accept orders of 100 pieces, subject to an evaluation of the structure and production requirements.
Projects involving specialty paper, custom hardware or complex production processes may require a higher minimum order quantity. These quantities are for reference only and may not apply to every packaging project.
Please send us your specific requirements, and we will recommend the most suitable and practical production quantity for your project.
07. Do you accept small trial orders?
Yes. HKY PACKAGE supports trial orders for new brands, product launches, limited editions and market testing when the structure and production method are suitable.
A small order usually has a higher unit price because printing plates, dies, setup and sampling costs are divided across fewer boxes. We can compare different quantities and suggest a structure that is more economical for the first production run.
08. Can I receive a sample before mass production?
Yes. Different sample options are available:
- Existing samples for checking general quality
- Blank samples for testing size and structure
- Digital printed samples for reviewing layout and appearance
- Production-quality samples using the intended materials and finishes
Existing samples may be provided free of charge, with shipping paid by the customer. Custom sample costs depend on the materials, structure and finishing processes. When agreed in the quotation, part or all of the sample charge may be credited toward the bulk order.
09. How long does custom packaging sampling take?
A digital mock-up can normally be prepared within 24 hours after the structure and artwork are confirmed.
Physical samples generally take approximately 3–8 working days. More time may be required for special paper, custom inserts, new molds, complex printing or handcrafted finishes.
Before sampling begins, we will confirm the sample type, cost, expected completion date and which details the sample is intended to verify.
10. What happens if the first sample needs to be changed?
We first identify whether the change relates to size, structure, material, color, finishing or a new customer requirement.
If the sample does not match the confirmed specifications because of our error, HKY PACKAGE will be responsible for correcting it. If the customer changes an approved dimension, artwork, material or structure, an additional sample cost or revised schedule may apply.
Mass production will not begin until the final sample, specifications and artwork have been approved.
11. What artwork files do you need, and can you check my design?
Editable AI, PDF or EPS vector files are preferred. Please:
- Outline all fonts
- Embed linked images
- Use images of at least 300 dpi
- Set artwork to CMYK or specified Pantone colors
- Place special finishes on separate layers
- Include the required bleed and safety margin
Our team can check the dieline, resolution, color mode, fonts, bleed and finishing positions before printing. We can also help place existing artwork on the dieline.
Customers should still carefully approve spelling, barcodes, legal statements, product information and final artwork content.
Materials, Inserts and Printing
12. Can you design a custom insert around my product?
Yes. We can develop inserts according to the product’s dimensions, shape, weight, fragility and presentation requirements.
- Paperboard and corrugated inserts
- EVA and foam
- Honeycomb paper
- Molded pulp
- PET or PVC trays where appropriate
For bottles, electronics, medical devices or other fragile products, sending a physical product sample can improve the accuracy of the fit. We aim to balance product protection, presentation, assembly efficiency and cost.
13. What packaging materials can I choose?
Common options include greyboard, coated paper, kraft paper, specialty paper and corrugated board.
Rigid boxes commonly use greyboard wrapped with printed or specialty paper. Folding cartons use thinner paperboard and are usually supplied flat. Corrugated structures provide better shipping protection, while specialty papers create a more distinctive premium appearance.
The most suitable material depends on product weight, required protection, box structure, brand positioning, budget, shipping conditions and sustainability targets. We can compare several options before sampling.
14. How do you control CMYK and Pantone printing colors?
CMYK is suitable for photographs, gradients and full-color artwork. Pantone spot colors are often more suitable when a brand requires a specific solid color.
Before production, we check the artwork color mode and printing requirements. During production, color is monitored using approved references and printing standards.
15. What printing and surface finishing options do you offer?
HKY PACKAGE provides:
- Offset printing
- Foil stamping
- Embossing and debossing
- Spot UV
- Matte, gloss or soft-touch lamination
- Screen printing and specialty papers
- Windows, ribbons and magnetic closures
Several processes can be combined to create a premium result. However, using too many finishes can increase cost and production time. We can recommend a simpler combination when it achieves a similar visual effect more efficiently.
16. Do you offer FSC-certified or sustainable packaging options?
Yes. Depending on the project, we can offer FSC-certified paper, recyclable paper structures, kraft paper, molded pulp, paper inserts and other material-reduction solutions.
We can also optimize the box size, reduce unnecessary components or replace plastic inserts with paper-based alternatives where suitable.
HKY PACKAGE operates under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems. FSC-certified materials and relevant test reports are available upon request for eligible projects. Please tell us about any certification, food-contact or destination-market requirement before ordering.
Production, Quality and Delivery
17. How long does mass production take?
Production time depends on the box structure, order quantity, material availability, printing processes and finishing complexity.
Many standard projects can be completed in approximately 10–20 working days after the sample, artwork and order specifications have been approved.
Complex rigid boxes, custom inserts, special papers and handcrafted finishes may require more time. Faster production may be available for urgent projects after we review the production schedule and material availability.
18. How do you inspect and test custom packaging?
HKY PACKAGE carries out three main inspection stages:
- Incoming material inspection
- In-process production inspection
- Final pre-shipment inspection
Depending on the project, we check dimensions, structure, printing, color, finishing positions, surface condition, folding, assembly, gluing strength, insert fit, quantity and export cartons.
Fit tests, assembly tests, drop tests and transportation-related tests can also be arranged. Photos, videos and third-party inspection are available when required.
19. What shipping terms and delivery options are available?
- Express courier for samples and urgent small shipments
- Air freight for faster commercial delivery
- Sea freight for larger and more economical shipments
- Combined shipping solutions when appropriate
Available trade terms may include EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP, depending on the destination and project. We can also deliver the goods to your nominated freight forwarder in China.
To calculate shipping accurately, please provide the destination country, city, postal code and whether delivery is to a business address, warehouse, port or fulfillment center.
20. What happens if there is a quality problem after delivery?
Please contact us promptly and provide:
- Order number
- Affected quantity
- Photos or videos
- Export carton labels
- A clear description of the problem
We will review the approved sample, production specifications, inspection records and evidence provided.
If production does not meet the confirmed specifications, we will propose an appropriate solution, which may include rework, replacement, replenishment or compensation according to the circumstances. Transportation damage will also be investigated using the carton condition, packing records and shipping documents.
