Standard Matte vs. Anti-Scratch Matte Lamination: What’s the Difference?

Matte lamination gives packaging a smooth, non-glossy finish, but standard matte and anti-scratch matte films perform differently. The right choice depends on appearance, handling, budget, and how the packaging will be used.
Both options add a protective film to the printed surface and create a refined matte appearance. The main difference is that anti-scratch matte lamination has a more abrasion-resistant surface, helping the packaging stay cleaner during production, packing, shipping, and customer handling.
- What Is Standard Matte Lamination? Standard matte lamination uses a regular matte film to reduce shine and protect the printed paper from moisture, dirt, and light surface wear. It provides a soft, understated appearance and is widely used for folding cartons, gift boxes, sleeves and paper bags.
It is usually the more economical option. However, dark colours—especially black and navy—may show rubbing marks, fingerprints, or fine scratches more easily after repeated handling.
- What Is Anti-Scratch Matte Lamination? Anti-scratch matte lamination uses a specially treated film with improved resistance to scuffing and abrasion. It keeps the same low-gloss look while offering better protection against visible handling marks.
It is often selected for premium rigid boxes, cosmetic packaging, electronics packaging and dark-coloured designs where surface marks would be especially noticeable.
IMPORTANT
Anti-scratch does not mean completely scratch-proof. Sharp objects, strong pressure or rough transport can still damage the surface, but it performs better than ordinary matte film under normal handling.
